A split gaiter means that dirt and moisture can penetrate to the internal components of the steering rack. This is often not an issue that can be easily repaired, as contamination can have already entered the rack and caused severe damage to the seals and bearing surfaces.

Stiffness or ‘notchiness’ when steering, which may even cause the wheel to catch or grab within the lock, can be a sign of wear within the steering rack’s internal components and could require replacement.

By this point the wandering at speed is usually obvious and has failed the MOT steering inspection test. The cause would have been identified by checking the tie-rod ends, but the wear is actually within the rack housing.

Clunking on Full Lock or Over Bumps

A knock on full lock or over bumps will indicate that the internal stops or bearing have worn and cannot be repaired with adjustment.
