Don’t pay over the odds for your steering rack replacement. Find out how we calculate what we charge and you can work out how much your replacement steering rack will cost for your Ford model.
New vs Reconditioned Units
Brand new steering racks cost anywhere between £150 and £400 for the part, whereas a quality reconditioned unit can be supplied for £80 – £200. For most everyday Ford models, a reconditioned steering rack would be a very good alternative to buying new.
How Much Labour to Expect
Allow 2-3 hours labour time at a garage. This will cost £60-£90 per hour so an estimate for the labour portion alone would be £120-£270. Note: older models, and more complex ones too, can take longer to complete so make sure to get a fixed price quote from the garage before letting them start!
Model Makes a Difference
The cost for parts for a Ford Focus or Fiesta steering rack is generally less expensive than a Mondeo or Transit part. Also, the cost to access parts for these models can be more expensive. Parts Often Replaced at the Same Time
Tie rod ends and the steering rack gaiters often wear out at about the same time as the steering rack itself and it is sensible to replace them all at the same time to save subsequent labour costs. Most garages would recommend this.
How to Avoid Overpaying
Get a few quotes and check if they are including parts and if they can use reconditioned steering racks and fit them for you to save around £100 or so.
By finding out what they will cost before you order them, you can avoid surprise bills when the garage finally submits their bill to you.
