Ford Steering Rack Leak Repair Options

A leaking rack can cause the steering to become much heavier, and will not repair itself over time.

Find Where the Leak Is Coming From

Rack leaks can occur from 3 areas of the rack, the end seals (where the rack meets the steering column or track rod) the inner piston seals or a split gaiter. A torn gaiter can allow dirt to enter the rack and cause rapid wear of the internal components, often making it economical to repair whilst the leak is minor.

Seal Additives Are a Temporary Measure

Fluid conditioner additives can help to temporarily soften up hardened rubber seals and could even prevent minor end seal weep for a short period of time. However, this is a temporary measure and will not help with problems such as a split gaiter or worn inner seal. Moreover, a leaking rack is one of the components that are subject to an MOT inspection for steering parts and would result in a failure.

Professional Seal Replacement

A specialist can strip the rack and fit new seals. He will remove the old seals from the rack body and replace them with new ones. The other components, such as the Rack Mounting Bushes etc, will also be inspected and replaced if required.

Reconditioning or Exchange

This type of repair replaces all the worn seals, bushes etc. within the steering rack and can be done as an exchange unit, so you can have your vehicle back faster. The Ford steering racks can vary from model, to engine type, to whether it has power steering or not. There is more on Ford Steering Racks at https://westernpowersteering.co.uk/vehicles/ford/.

When to Replace Outright

If your steering rack has been damaged in some way (e.g. scored), or there is too much internal damage for a repair to be cost effective, then it is time to think about replacing the whole unit with a new one or a re-manufactured one.

This helps to keep the cost down and can often be repaired for a fraction of the cost of a new rack.
