Choosing a Horizontal Bending Machine

The first thing to get right when buying a horizontal bending machine is the specification.

Working Capacity and Material Range

Check the rated tonnage of the machine as well as the maximum dimensions of the profiles that it is able to bend. As a rule of thumb it is a good idea to ensure that the machine is able to handle the current stock held, but also take into account any future items that may be added to the stock range. This could be larger sections or in fact harder alloys and by adding a bit of a safety margin when choosing a machine, it will prevent any problems occurring in the future.

Tooling Compatibility and Changeover

Manual machines are inherently easier to maintain than their CNC counterparts and are generally more cost effective for initial purchase. However, as has been noted above, a CNC machine will pay dividends in production quickly where jobs are repeated time and time again. Some machines will also have a programmable back-gauge and allow the user to set up stored job settings to aid production.

CNC or Manual Controls

Manual machines are generally the simplest of machines to maintain, and can cost less to purchase than a CNC bending machine. However in many instances the CNC back-gauge will repay itself in a matter of jobs. Many machines can be set up with a stored job setting, or with a back-gauge that can be programmed for accurate repeatability.

Back-Gauge and Repeatability

The back-gauge of a bending machine is a critical component as it ensures that the ends of the bent parts are always cut to exactly the same position. When specifying a bending machine it is therefore important to establish the repeatability of the back-gauge in mm. For production work a figure of ±0.1mm or better is required.

Frame Rigidity and Footprint

A rigid machine frame ensures that low deflection is maintained even under heaviest loads. When very accurate work is undertaken, every millimetre counts. Ensure that the footprint of the machine is adequate for the available floor space. Allow space for long bar stock to feed across the front of the machine. After-Sales Support and Safety Compliance

Spare parts. Response times. A machine is only as good as the support you receive after purchase. Make sure you have a good supply of spare parts held by the supplier and that they will respond in good time should you require assistance. Also check that the machine you are purchasing meets current PUWER requirements. The HSE’s guidance on safe use of work equipment and machinery is a good starting point to understand your obligations prior to purchase.

A clear specification prior to contacting suppliers will save time when discussing the options available to you to ensure that you purchase the correct machine for your business.
