Clunking When You Turn

Fluid Leaking Under the Car

Steering fluid: Check for signs of leaking power steering fluid from the steering rack. Check along the rack itself as well as the gaiter ends for signs of oily staining or wet patches. Be aware that even a small amount of fluid loss can cause pump damage so top up as necessary and try to find the cause.

Heavy or Uneven Steering at Low Speed

Feeling heavy while steering during low speed maneuvers could indicate worn seals inside the steering rack. This type of problem typically starts out occasionally then becomes more frequent as the problem gets worse.

Excessive Play in the Wheel

Looseness in the steering, where the wheel moves before coming to rest and the car reacts. This type of problem is often caused by worn rack internals, or worn tie rod ends, which can often develop slowly and be missed until the problem gets worse.

Pulling to One Side

This can cause your car to pull to one side. If you have an alignment check done and your wheel alignment is within limits, the problem could be the steering rack. Get this checked before you have an expensive repair.
